A Chinese black lacquer chest with gilt-painted decoration, in a classic 19th-century style. The front panels are decorated with traditional still life scenes—vases, florals, and scholarly objects—picked out in softly worn gold against a deep black ground.

The surface shows beautifully layered wear, with areas of lacquer loss revealing texture and depth beneath. The decoration has mellowed over time, giving the piece a natural richness and character that can’t be replicated. The side panels retain traces of original painted floral motifs, now gently faded.

Raised on a shaped plinth base, the chest retains its original metal hardware, including hinges and central lock plates with drop pulls.

A compact, low piece that works well at the end of a bed, as a coffee table alternative, or as a characterful storage piece in a living space.
